If you have a letter of eligibility from Maritime New Zealand to appear the Class 2 Marine Engineer course, you would need to attend the 8 subjects listed below

1. Mathematics Only required for the Class 2 Marine Engineer course.
2. Engineering Drawing Only required for the Class 2 Marine Engineer course.
3. Thermodynamics Option of appearing at Class 2 level or going up to the Class 1 Level
4. Electro Technology Option of appearing at Class 2 level or going up to the Class 1 Level.
5. Naval Architecture Option of appearing at Class 2 level or going up to the Class 1 Level.
6. Vessel Construction Option of appearing at Class 2 level or going up to the Class 1 Level.
7. Mechanical Technology Option of appearing at Class 2 level or going up to the Class 1 Level.
8. Engineering Knowledge & Orals Only required for the Class 2 Marine Engineer course.

If you opt to do subjects in items 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 at the Class 1 level instead of the Class 2 level, you would not have to go through them again when you appear for the Class 1 Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency exam.

Should you choose to do these subjects at the Class 2 level, then you would need to do them at the higher level when you return for the Class 1. The class is a combined one though students appear at different levels.

After you qualify the Class 2 Marine Engineers Certificate of Competency, you would need to accumulate the requisite sea-time to be eligible for the Class 1 Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency.

If you have cleared the subjects mentioned above (items 3 to 7) at the Class 1 level and have requisite seatime whilst holding Class 2 Marine Engineers Certificate of Competency, then Maritime New Zealand would grant you eligibility to do the following for Class 1 Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency:

1. Command Principles & Practice (Management)
2. Marine Control
3. Engineering Knowledge & Orals (at Class 1 level)
